Dr. Scott A. Van Beck worked inside the public education system for 35 years as a teacher, principal, region superintendent, and non-profit leader. Scott is uniquely positioned to offer criticism toward the traditional public education system, since very few have worked as long and in so many different school positions as Dr. Van Beck. Van Beck is deeply committed to helping create a new system of learning for our young people, a system built around individual learning plans, supported by learning coaches and a peer-based learning cohort.
Van Beck received his Doctorate of Education in Professional Leadership from the University of Houston in 2015. He spent his entire professional career in Houston, Texas, working 25 years for the Houston Independent School District and 10 years as the executive director of Houston A+ Challenge, a non-profit committed to improving public schooling throughout the Houston region and beyond. While serving as a executive director, Van Beck and his team launch A+UP, a personalized learning lab school located within the Houston Museum District. While watching A+UP’s three-year pilot, Van Beck became convinced a better path to learning was possible. Working with a partner to launch The Education Game, a movement to empower parents to design learning plans for their children, Van Beck had the idea for a on-line space where parents, teachers, school leaders, young learners, and others interested in a new system of learning could come to read, study, and reflect. A Better Path to Learning was launched.
